Explore the mountainous north island.
The main landmark not to be missed on the west coast of the North Island is Mt. Taranaki, a snow-capped volcanic peak that (on a clear day) can be seen from miles away. It is located in Egmont National Park, one of only three national parks in the North Island of the New Zealand, where there are many hiking trails and mountain views. It takes four to five days to travel around Mount Taranaki, but many short hikes are also possible.
One way to get from A to B (Wellington to Auckland and vice versa) to see most of the North Island in a short amount of time is to take the Northern Explorer. The passenger train travels up the Kapiti Coast from Wellington, past the Central Highlands (and past the volcanoes of Tongariro National Park) and the atmospheric Kings Country before arriving in Auckland. The journey takes 10 to 12 hours, but if you have to walk the entire North Island, it’s better than driving, and you’ll see a lot more than flying. There’s a food truck, an outdoor viewing deck, and informative reviews on headphones.
The North Island has a variety of kayaking opportunities that allow you to get up close and personal with nature’s spectacular coastal landscapes in clear subtropical waters. Some of the best places include Auckland, Bay of Islands, Lake Taupo and Lake Rotoiti (Tasman).

Sightseeing City Tour – If you want to get to know the city, join this half-day tour that takes you to the city’s main attractions, including Old St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Capitol, and the Vita Caves. You’ll also drive to Mount Victoria Lookout and ride the city’s famous cable car. If you’re short on time in town, this is a great way to see some of Wellington’s most popular attractions.
We highly recommend taking their free guided tour, or if you prefer, you can pick up a free map and guide yourself around the venue – a lovely activity to do on a sunny afternoon. Alternatively, visit the public gallery for a tour of Parliament in full swing.
Often referred to as the Old Government Buildings, these colonial buildings resemble stone palaces designed in classical Italian and Renaissance architectural styles. It is one of Wellington’s most important historical attractions. You need 30 to 45 minutes to visit these buildings.
Take a trip to the stunning lake tekapo.
If you have time, you can even walk the entire Lake Tekapo sidewalk. The trail takes you along the coastal night sky, and you can choose to walk to the Mount John Observatory on the hill behind the lake. This is a nice walk that allows you to see and really appreciate the scenery around Lake Tekapo.
Stop at multiple lookout points on Lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki, Mount Cook, Mount Tasman and the surrounding mountains. Spot wild sheep and red deer on the way to Musterers Hut, accessible by 4WD only. Tea and snacks are available here. This is the only tour of its kind in the Tekapo region and definitely one of the must dos in Lake Tekapo.
